Finding Your Light: A Guide to Natural Photography

Light is the one thing I can't fake, and honestly, it's the one thing I never want to. Every session I shoot is built around chasing good, honest light rather than fighting it with flashes and reflectors.

My favourite time of day is golden hour — that stretch just after sunrise or before sunset when the light turns warm and low and forgiving. It wraps around faces instead of flattening them. If you've ever wondered why your own phone photos from midday look a bit harsh, this is why: overhead sun creates hard shadows under eyes and noses. Golden hour softens all of that.

But golden hour isn't the only option, and I don't want families to feel like a 6am session is the only "correct" choice. Overcast days are a gift — the whole sky becomes one giant softbox, and the light is even and gentle all day long. Some of my favourite portraits have come from grey Canterbury afternoons that looked unpromising and turned out beautifully soft.

Open shade is another trick I lean on constantly — the edge of a treeline, the side of a building, anywhere the direct sun is blocked but the sky is still bright. It's flattering, it's consistent, and it means we're not chasing a 20-minute window to get the shot.

What I ask of families isn't complicated: wear soft, natural colours, don't stress about "matching," and trust that the in-between moments — the ones where nobody's looking at the camera — are usually the best ones. My job is to notice the light and stay out of the way so your family's real story to comes through.

Canterbury Locations

The Best Locations in Canterbury for Family Photos

One of the best parts of shooting around Canterbury is how much variety we have on our doorstep — coastline, farmland, riverbanks, and city gardens, often all within a 20-minute drive of each other.

The Christchurch Botanic Gardens are a classic for a reason. Dappled light through mature trees, a mix of open lawns and tucked-away corners, and something blooming nearly every season. It's especially lovely in spring when the blossoms are out, but the bones of the gardens hold up beautifully in every season.

For families who love the coast, Sumner Beach gives us that wide open sky and soft sand that toddlers can't resist running across. Late afternoon here is magic — the light bounces off the water and wraps everyone in a warm glow. Taylors Mistake, just around the bay, is quieter and feels a little more wild if you're after something less crowded.

Out towards Selwyn and Lincoln, the farmland and long grass paddocks give us that soft, golden, "storybook" feeling — especially gorgeous for maternity sessions where I want the focus purely on the shape of your family against a simple, textured backdrop.

And if your family has a place that already means something to you — your own backyard, your grandparents' farm, the park you walk the dog in every day — that's often the best location of all. Familiar places tend to bring out the most relaxed, natural version of everyone. I'm always happy to talk through what's the right fit for your session.

Photography Philosophy

The Grace in Fleeting Moments

I used to think good family photography was about getting everyone to look at the camera at the same time with the same smile. I don't believe that anymore.

The photos my clients tell me they love most, years later, are rarely the posed ones. It's the photo of a toddler mid-tantrum being scooped up by dad. It's the look between siblings right before one of them starts laughing. It's a mum closing her eyes for half a second, just breathing, while her baby sleeps on her chest. None of that is "perfect" in the traditional sense. All of it is true.

Kids especially don't perform well on command, and honestly, I don't want them to. My job during a session is less "director" and more "quiet observer" — I give gentle prompts, create a bit of playful space, and then I wait for the real moment to happen in between the instructions. Those are the split seconds that don't come back.

This is why I don't chase stiff, symmetrical poses. I'd rather have connection over composition any day. A slightly messy hug beats a perfectly lined-up family photo where everyone looks like they'd rather be somewhere else.

Life moves fast — especially with little ones. The way your child holds your hand right now, the size of them against your shoulder, the particular chaos of this exact age — it's all temporary. My work is about slowing that down just enough to hold onto it. That's the whole philosophy, really: less performance, more grace.

Seasonal Light & How It Changes Your Story

Canterbury gives us four genuinely different seasons, and each one changes not just the scenery but the entire feeling of a session.

Spring light is fresh and a little unpredictable — clear mornings, soft new growth, blossoms everywhere. It has an energy to it that suits families with young kids who are just as unpredictable and full of movement.

Summer gives us long evenings and that gorgeous late golden hour that stretches out well past 7pm. It's the season for barefoot beach sessions and paddock light that turns almost amber by the time we wrap up. The days are generous, which means less rushing and more time to let a session breathe.

Autumn is, without question, my favourite. The light turns soft and a little hazy, the colours in the trees do half the work for me, and there's a warmth to the whole season that feels nostalgic even while it's happening. It's a beautiful time for family and maternity sessions alike.

Winter in Canterbury is underrated. The light is low all day, which actually means we get "golden hour" quality light for hours rather than just twenty minutes. Crisp air, misty mornings, and that low warm sun create some genuinely striking, moody images — perfect for smaller, more intimate sessions.

There's no wrong season to book in. Each one tells a different kind of story, and part of my job is helping you choose the season that matches the story you want to tell.

Heritage & Legacy

Light, Legacy, and Home: How My Greek Heritage Shapes My Photography

Growing up in a Greek household, family wasn't just something you had — it was something you actively practiced. Big lunches that ran for hours. Grandparents who held babies the second they walked in the door. A house that was never quiet, in the best way.

That upbringing shaped how I see family now, and it shapes how I photograph it. I'm not interested in a beautifully lit but emotionally empty photograph. I want the noise, the mess, the closeness — the things that made my own childhood feel so full.

There's a word in Greek culture, even if it's not always said out loud: nostalgia — from nostos (νόστος, "homecoming") and algos (άλγος, "pain"), the ache of longing to return. It's the idea that memory lives in the senses as much as in facts. The smell of something cooking, the sound of a particular laugh, the exact way your yiayia held your face in her hands. Photography, to me, is trying to capture that same sensory kind of memory — not just what someone looked like, but what it felt like to be near them.

That's why I care so much about capturing real interaction between family members rather than everyone lined up facing forward. The hand on a shoulder. The forehead kiss. The way a toddler grabs a fistful of mum's shirt. These are the details that, twenty years from now, will matter far more than whether everyone was smiling.

Becoming a mum myself made this even more personal. I know how fast this all moves, and I know what it means to have something real to hold onto once it's passed. That's the legacy I want to help every family walk away with.

Booking & Payment

Booking & Cancellation Policy

At Ember & Oak, every session is thoughtfully planned and time is reserved especially for you. This policy helps ensure that bookings, cancellations and rescheduling are handled fairly for everyone.

Booking Your Session

Your session is considered confirmed once the required booking fee has been paid and any required booking agreement has been accepted. The booking fee secures your chosen date and time and is applied toward the total cost of your photography session. The remaining balance must be paid by the date stated on your invoice or booking confirmation.

Rescheduling

Life happens, especially with young families. Where possible, please provide at least 48 hours' notice if you need to reschedule. Sessions may be transferred to another available date where reasonable. For genuine illness, family emergencies or circumstances outside your control, please contact me as soon as possible and I will always try to find a fair solution.

Weather

Outdoor sessions are dependent on suitable weather and light. Cloudy weather does not automatically mean a session will be postponed — beautiful photographs can be created in many different conditions. If weather conditions are unsafe or unsuitable, Ember & Oak may recommend rescheduling. In this situation, your booking will be transferred to a mutually agreed alternative date without a rescheduling fee.

Client Cancellation

If you choose to cancel your session, please contact Ember & Oak as early as possible. Any cancellation terms, including whether a booking fee can be refunded or transferred, will be those disclosed and agreed to when your booking is made. Where possible, Ember & Oak may allow your booking fee to be transferred to another session date.

No-Shows

Clients who do not attend their confirmed session without notice may forfeit their booking fee and may need to make a new booking and payment to schedule another session.

Cancellation by Ember & Oak

In the unlikely event that I am unable to photograph your session due to illness, emergency or circumstances outside my reasonable control, you will be offered either a suitable replacement date or a refund of amounts paid for services that cannot be provided, as appropriate.

Nothing in this policy limits any rights you may have under New Zealand consumer law.

Your Photographs

Photographs created during your session form part of the photography service provided by Ember & Oak. Your photographs will not automatically be used publicly simply because you booked a session. Where photographs may be used for portfolio, website, social media, advertising, awards, publications or promotional purposes, the applicable permissions will be explained through your photography agreement, booking form or model release. You may discuss privacy preferences with Ember & Oak before your session.

Photographs of Children

Ember & Oak understands the importance of privacy when photographing children. Images of children will only be used publicly where appropriate permission has been obtained from a parent or legal guardian. Clients may request that their session remain completely private.

Storage and Security

Reasonable steps are taken to protect personal information and photographs from loss, unauthorised access, misuse or disclosure. Some information may be stored using trusted third-party platforms used to operate the business, such as website hosting, email, booking systems, payment providers and online gallery services.

Third-Party Services

Ember & Oak may use third-party providers to help deliver services, including website hosting, online galleries, payment processing, email, booking and client-management systems, and analytics. These providers may process information according to their own privacy policies.

Cookies and Website Analytics

The Ember & Oak website may use cookies or similar technologies to help the website function, understand how visitors use the site and improve the browsing experience. You can usually control or disable cookies through your browser settings.

Accessing or Correcting Your Information

By booking photography services with Ember & Oak, you acknowledge and agree to the following terms.

Photography Style & Creative Control

By booking Ember & Oak, you acknowledge that you have reviewed and chosen the photographer based on their existing portfolio, editing style and creative approach. Final image selection, composition, editing and artistic treatment remain at the photographer's creative discretion and will reflect the timeless, natural and true-to-colour style of Ember & Oak. Every session is unique, and exact replication of photographs from previous sessions cannot be guaranteed.

RAW & Unedited Images

RAW or unedited photographs are not normally provided. The finished edited photographs represent the final artistic work of Ember & Oak. Clients will receive only the final images selected and professionally edited by the photographer.

Image Delivery

Estimated gallery delivery times will be communicated at booking. Delivery timeframes may vary depending on the type of session, season, workload or circumstances outside the photographer's control. Ember & Oak will make reasonable efforts to deliver photographs within the estimated timeframe provided.

Copyright

Unless otherwise agreed in writing, Ember & Oak retains copyright in photographs created by the photographer. Clients receive personal-use rights to their purchased or delivered images, allowing them to download, print and share their photographs for personal purposes. Images may not be sold, commercially reproduced, submitted for commercial publication or used for business purposes without written permission.

Editing and Alteration

Clients are kindly asked not to significantly alter the final photographs in a way that misrepresents the work of Ember & Oak. This includes heavy filters, significant colour changes or edits that substantially change the photographer's finished style. Cropping for social media use is permitted.

Social Media

Clients are welcome to share their photographs online for personal use. Where practical, credit to Ember & Oak Photography is always appreciated.

Client Cooperation

Beautiful photographs depend on cooperation between the photographer and participants. While every reasonable effort will be made to create a varied and beautiful gallery, Ember & Oak cannot guarantee a particular pose, expression, image or number of specific photographs. Circumstances such as children's behaviour, weather, lateness, lighting, location restrictions or participant cooperation may affect the final gallery.

Children

A parent, legal guardian or responsible adult must supervise children throughout photography sessions. The photographer is not responsible for supervising children. Parents or guardians remain responsible for the safety, behaviour and supervision of children during the session.

Late Arrival

Sessions are booked within allocated time periods. Late arrival may reduce the amount of photography time available. Sessions cannot always be extended due to other bookings, available natural light, venue restrictions or location conditions.

Location Safety

Clients are responsible for following reasonable safety instructions provided by the photographer during the session. Ember & Oak reserves the right to stop or relocate a session if conditions are considered unsafe.

Image Archiving

Clients are responsible for downloading and safely backing up their final photographs after delivery. Online galleries may only remain available for a specified period. Ember & Oak does not guarantee permanent or indefinite storage of photographs after final delivery. Clients are strongly encouraged to download their entire gallery and maintain multiple backups.

Technical Failure

Ember & Oak takes reasonable precautions to protect images, including appropriate equipment and backup processes. In the highly unlikely event that photographs are lost, damaged or unable to be delivered due to equipment failure, file corruption or circumstances beyond reasonable control, the photographer will work with the client to provide an appropriate solution, which may include a reshoot or refund where applicable.

Personal Belongings

Ember & Oak is not responsible for loss, theft or damage to personal belongings brought to a photography session.

Force Majeure

Ember & Oak will not be responsible for delays or inability to perform services due to circumstances outside reasonable control, including severe weather, natural disasters, illness, travel disruption, venue closure or other unforeseen events. Where possible, reasonable efforts will be made to reschedule the session or provide an appropriate alternative.

Photo Sharing

Image Use & Model Release

Ember & Oak values your privacy and understands that every family has different preferences regarding the sharing of photographs. Before photographs from your session are used publicly, your preferences regarding image use may be confirmed through your booking agreement, questionnaire or model release.

You may be given the following options:

— Yes, I am happy for selected photographs from my session to be used by Ember & Oak for portfolio, website, social media, advertising, publications or promotional purposes.
— Please ask me before sharing specific photographs publicly.
— No, I would like my session and photographs to remain completely private.

Choosing not to give permission for public image use will not affect the quality of service you receive from Ember & Oak. For photographs containing children, appropriate parent or legal guardian permission will be required before images are intentionally used for promotional purposes.
